Justified inference

چکیده

In this essay, I shall propose a general conception of the kind of inference that counts as justified or rational. This conception involves a version of the idea that justified belief is “closed” under competent inference—that is, roughly, whenever one competently infers a conclusion from a set of premises each of which one justifiedly believes, this inference always puts one in a position to have a justified belief in the conclusion. Although many philosophers have advocated versions of this idea of “closure”, the idea has also been widely criticized. The conception proposed here is designed to circumvent these criticisms.

Scientific Reasoning Is Material Inference : Combining

Whereas an inference (deductive as well as inductive) is usually viewed as being valid in virtue of its argument form, the present paper argues that scientific reasoning is material inference, i.e., justified in virtue of its content. A material inference is licensed by the empirical content embodied in the concepts contained in the premisses and conclusion. Understanding scientific reasoning a...

Inference Mechanisms, Systems of Fuzzy Relational Equations and the Additive Interpretations of Rule Bases

Fuzzy inference systems are studied from the point of view of systems of fuzzy relation equations. A fundamental interpolation condition is considered to be a crucial point of study in choosing proper inference method as well as a proper interpretation of a fuzzy rule base. The paper aims at additive interpretations and investigates their utilization from a theoretical point of view while their...

Magnitude-based inference and its application in user research

Magnitude-based inference offers a theoretically justified and practically useful approach in any behavioural research that involves statistical inference. This approach supports two important types of inference: mechanistic inference and practical inference to support real-world decision-making. Therefore, this approach is especially suitable for user research. We present basic elements of mag...

Justifying inference to the best explanation as a practical meta-syllogism on dialectical structures

This article discusses how inference to the best explanation (IBE) can be justified as a practical meta-argument. It is, firstly, justified as a practical argument insofar as accepting the best explanation as true can be shown to further a specific aim. And because this aim is a discursive one which proponents can rationally pursue in—and relative to—a complex controversy, namely maximising the...
